Supernumerary by Lydia Ostler
Supernumerary, originally titled Slant, is an unpublished manuscript by the author Lydia Ostler. In Fall 2024, myself and two peers worked to create a marketing and sales kit for this manuscript in Daniel Weaver’s Book Publishing Essentials course.
As a collaborative project, each of the members of the team contributed to every aspect, but each of us chose a special focus to take the lead on—mine being the production design of the manuscript. For this, I designed multiple covers, created mockups of the covers in a number of variations, and designed sample interior spreads for the text block. I also calculated and designated the specs of the book, from fonts used, design features, and dimensions.
Alongside this, we also created a semi-ficticious publishing house named Second Floor Press to be the fictional publisher of the manuscript. Second Floor Press, is described as “a small, startup publishing house based in Boston, MA. Run by an all-woman executive board, Second Floor works to uplift and empower female authors by making their voices heard. “
